Paen was taking over as chatelain at Rumsfeld. They would be moving there. She would have her own
household to run.
Avelyn felt the horror creep over her. A week ago, she would have thought it was a fine thing and would
have looked forward to being mistress of her own home. Her mother had taken great care to teach her
all she should know for the task. However, that had been before Avelyn had somehow fallen under a
cloud of calamity. Now, the idea horrified her. She would reduce Rumsfeld to rubble within a week with
her clumsiness, she supposed miserably.
"Rumsfeld is where Lady Christina grew up 'tis her family home. When her parents died some years
ago, it passed to her and Lord Gerville."
"Lady Christina was an only child," Lady Helen put in and her niece Diamanda nodded.
For her part, Avelyn remained silent, simply listening as the trio walked upstairs, headed for the solar.
They had just left the hall after breaking their fast. Paen and his father had already left for Rumsfeld by
the time Avelyn had taken care of her morning ablutions and gone below. It had just been the four
women and several hundred servants and soldiers at the tables this morning.
Of course, the first thing out of Lady Gerville's mouth had been about the move to Rumsfeld. It seemed
everyone had already known about it, including Diamanda and Lady Helen. Avelyn had been the last to
know.
She'd learned at table that it had been decided they should wait another week to go. It was hoped the
extra time would give Paen's hands a chance to finish healing. Avelyn thus had another week to repack
her chests in preparation of moving. Not that there was much to repack. Other than her clothes, nothing
had come out of the chests since the journey. None of it had been needed here.
Lady Gerville had spoken with forced cheer about the move, and it seemed to Avelyn that Paen's
mother was no more happy about it than she herself was. Even Diamanda and Lady Helen had seemed
subdued. Avelyn had been grateful to escape the solar to finish off her new efforts at a tunic and braes for
her husband. She'd started the project the day after their arrival here at Gerville. After wandering the
castle aimlessly for most of the morning, she'd decided she might as well start on another outfit for Paen.
While he still wore a pair of braes and a tunic that had belonged to his brother, they didn't fit as well as
they might.
"Rumsfeld is quite lovely," Diamanda continued as they reached the solar. "I am sure you shall like it."
"You have been there?" Avelyn asked curiously as Lady Helen pushed open the door.
"Aye. My family traveled by it on our way here when I first came to train with Lady Chris !" Diamanda
stopped abruptly and glanced around when she bumped into her aunt. Lady Helen had suddenly stopped

in the door to the solar, blocking either woman from entering the room.
"Aunt Helen? What is it?" Diamanda shifted past the older woman and peered into the room, then gave a
soft "oh" as Lady Helen suddenly turned and tried to usher Avelyn away from the room. "Why do we not
go for a nice walk in the bailey?"
"What? But 'tis raining out," Avelyn reminded her, then frowned at her pitying expression and moved
past her, determined to see whatever was in the room.
"My dear, I do not think " Lady Helen touched Avelyn's shoulder to stop her, then fell silent and let her
hand fall away with a sigh as Avelyn slipped past Diamanda and into the room.
At first, Avelyn didn't see anything unusual or amiss. The room was empty except for Boudica and Juno.
Lady Christina's pet greyhounds were curled up asleep on top of an old strip of cloth their mistress had
laid out for their comfort.
Avelyn started to turn back toward the other two women, then paused and peered back at the bit of
cloth sticking out from under the hounds. It was the very same forest green as the fabric Lady Christina
had given her to sew Paen's new outfit the remains of the cloth the lady had made his wedding outfit
from.
"Avy?" Lady Helen asked with concern.
Avelyn crossed the room as carefully as if she were walking a narrow tree trunk laid over a river, placing
one foot in front of the other, her gaze locked on the cloth.
When she reached the dogs, she knelt just as carefully and plucked at the cloth, waking the dogs as she
slowly pulled it out from beneath them. Boudica and Juno scrambled to their feet and stood watching,
tails wagging as Avelyn held up the tunic she'd nearly finished for Paen. It was clawed and chewed up.
Ruined.
"Ohhh." It was a pained moan from Lady Helen. "And after all your work. Oh, Avelyn."
"I shall go fetch Lady Gerville," Diamanda said and hurried from the room.
Avelyn heard the girl hurry off, but simply sat there staring at the ruined remains of Paen's top. She could
hardly believe it. Shecouldn't believe it. Her stunned mind was floating useless in her head, unable to
