leave me here, Lucas? How could you do such a thing when I have as much right as you

to be there? My brother was killed by these butchers, and I won t remain here while you
follow them without me!
Trying to calm her, he stroked her hair lovingly and waited before he responded
in a soothingly deep voice. I just found ye and I canna lose ye, my love. It d be best if
ye stay safe and secure at Castle Stryker. When I ve returned, lass, we can make plans
for our future together. Leaning down, he kissed her tenderly on the lips.
The kiss was wonderful and his words reassuring, but her mind whirled with
thoughts of his departure without her, and she wasn t at all sure she wanted to be left
behind.

Chapter 14
Angus and the men had traveled amidst the dust clouds of the murderers for some
two days and had begun wondering if the brainless duo even realized they were being
followed. The past two days had dragged on as they followed closely yet discreetly
behind the meandering twosome.
They seemed unaware of the presence of the five burly men, as they passed a
flask of drink back and forth incessantly between them. Raucous laughter filled the air
more often than not, and they wandered along as if they had no particular place in the
world to be.
Angus hand inched its way towards his dirk, his hand gripping the familiar
handle. How easy it would be to simply throw his weapon and sink it into the backs of
these unsavory men. He and the men could very easily discard their bodies in a nearby
glen, burying them with the surrounding rocks to mask the offending odor of their rotting
flesh. But as tempting a thought as this presented, he knew he wouldn t get away with
the gruesome deed. Lucas would be livid at losing his chance to see the pair hang for
their abominable acts.
He had ordered Angus and his men to simply follow and assure the safety of
anyone they came across. Angus made a conscious effort at conversation with the
surrounding men to break up the monotony. Trying to take his mind off his dastardly
thoughts of murder, he spoke in low tones with the men. He needed a distraction from
his thoughts, to distance himself from his urge to dispose of the vermin that rode just
ahead of them.
Just the thought of Nell s life being taken from her violently was enough to make
him want to cause them a great deal of pain. Add to that the murder of countless other
unfortunate people, innocent people who didn t deserve to have their lives terminated
prematurely. And then to be used as medical subjects, dissected and cut up without
regard before observatories full of doctors. He couldn t get his mind off the idea of
stabbing these two and leaving them for the buzzards after what they had done to so
many others.
Approaching the village of Galashiels, Angus got an uneasy feeling. Gripping the
reins a little tighter, he squeezed with his knees, urging his mount to pick up the speed.
He wanted to be as close as possible to the killers should they make an unexpected move.
As they entered the quaint town, the two took notice of the surroundings, their
heads moving slowly from side to side as they chatted. Reining their mounts towards a
small stone pub, they secured the animals and walked inside.
Seems like a fitting spot for them to stop. They re more drunk than sober these
days, Angus spat, venom evident in his voice. Well, I ll be damned if we re going to
sit out here all night while they get snockered. Let s go in the back door to keep from
being noticed. The men all nodded in unison and dismounted and secured the horses.

As the five entered the dimly-lit tavern, they were careful to remain discreetly out
of sight of the two ruffians. Allowing their eyes to adjust to the semi-darkness, the men
wove their way to a table near the rear that could accommodate them all. Angus eyes
scanned the room as he moved to sit with his men.
The pub was a small, cozy room with walls of raw fieldstone. A winding bar
occupied only one corner of the room, while the rest was taken up by sporadically placed
tables and chairs. Candles occupied every table and graced a few walls, giving the room
just enough light for the patrons to eat by. Muted conversations resounded from around
the room, and occasional laughter punctuated the relative quiet.
After they had ordered their ale and stew, the men quietly conversed, keeping
their eyes trained on their prey. Angus did not partake in their discussion, however. He
